REWATCHING COMMUNITY BECAUSE WHY NOT, RIGHT?
S02E13: Celebrity Pharmacology
community easter eggs: #23 Daybreak
"Daybreak" by Michael Haggins is frequently featured on the show. The first time was in "Horror Fiction in Seven Spooky Steps" (S03E05), during Abed’s story. It also played in "Pillows and Blankets” (S03E14), on Neil’s radio program. The song is hummed by several characters throughout seasons 3 and 4 - Troy in ”Foosball and Nocturnal Vigilantism” (S03E09) and Virtual Systems Analysis (S03E16), Annie in “Urban Matrimony and the Sandwich Arts” (S03E11), Abed in “Digital Exploration of Interior Design” (S03E13), Shirley in“Cooperative Escapism In Familial Relations” (S04E05) and the puppet study group in “Intro To Felt Surrogacy” (S04E09) - as well as it is established as Troy’s ringtone in “Paranormal Parentage” (S04E02).
Things I learned from the episode commentaries:
- Richard Erdman (Leonard) was Marlon Brando’s roommate for a while. Advanced Criminal Law commentary.
- Ted Rooney (Shirley’s marketing professor) was originally cast as Dean Pelton and did the table read for the pilot, but David Silverman said they should see if they could find a person of color for this role. And then they found Jim Rash. Environmental Science commentary.
- Craig Cackowski (Security guard/police officer) is the brother of Liz Cackowski (“say penis” lady/ writer of Comparitive Religion and Social Psychology). The Politics of Human Sexuality commentary.
This is kinda like Breakfast Club, right? Movie reference. Sometimes I like to pour hot chocolate mix into cold milk and drink it with hot cocoa, I call it special drink. When you guys first came in we were as wholesome and healthy as the family in The Brady Bunch. And now we’re as dysfunctional and incestuous as the cast of The Brady Bunch. Come with me if you don’t wanna get paint on you. TV makes sense. It has logic, structure, rules. And likable leading men… We have you. I just like talking about Farscape. The Cape is premiering! Annie will always be driven, Shirley will always be giving, Pierce will never apologize, Britta’s sort of a wildcard from my perspective and Jeff will forever remain a conniving son of a bitch. Some flies are too awesome for the wall. I need help reacting to something. We’re together, that makes this the perfect timeline.
Abed is fragile. We have to ease him into it, okay? Do we want him to freak out and then we have to rescue him from some fantasy world, where submarines are small enough to enter the bloodstream?
Community parallels 3x16 and 4x3
I love Community. I love it for its epic Paintball and Dungeons & Dragons. I love it for its homages to Tarantino and Law & Order. I love it for its quirky meta humor and references to pop culture (many of which probably fly right over my head). I love it for its playful style. What other sitcom gives you a taste of anime, claymation, and 8-bit video games?
But at the end of the day and long after the final episode has aired, what I will carry with me are the beautiful characters. I will carry Abed, the detached observer who believed that his presence would only last as long as his usefulness, who discovered that someone was willing to open the metaphorical (or in the case of last night’s episode, literal) locker door.
This is some grade A storytelling here.
A Stealth Pun is a joke punch line that has a set up, of varying levels of subtlety, without the final delivery so the audience must themselves piece together what the joke is in their own heads.
That time Community (didn’t) make a joke about a class on how to write jokes.
metameta! Cool, cool cool cool. #abed #community #design #drawing #doodle #art #graphicdesign #popculture #cartoon
